For me, fall is a time of renewal. Winter is often a time of quiet reflection, meeting goals, a time of study and fulfilling accomplishments. In spring, we find ourselves shaking the weight of the last few months, watching the new season unfold bringing new life, challenges, dreams and often a reset of our goals. Such is the cycle of the seasons.

The role of the registered nurse is diverse and challenging. As we specialize in our practice, whether into critical care, neonatal intensive care, general surgery, emergency, home care or rural care, we have a commonality. As a critical care registered nurse, who has had an amazing career in this incredible profession, this Critical Reflections is a recounting of part of my journey. I hope you enjoy the tale of my wonderful and wonderous day shadowing a colleague in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

We have a voice, but is anyone listening? I have heard that question several times over the last few weeks. Are we listening to the needs of our patients, families and our colleagues?

As I write this, it is the middle of July and I am looking towards September. Before you know it, our precious summer will be ending and most of us will be preparing our children, our young adults and ourselves for the start of school and the fall. I know most feel that spring is a time of renewal. However, I feel that the months of September and October are often the start of a new beginning.

As I sit down to reflect and write my last Critical Reflections message as president of the CACCN, I am reflecting with proud admiration for the work that has been completed by the association over the past several years.
