Having just finished chipping the ice off my driveway after a hard day of work, I am thankful that Wiarton Willie (Ontario) and Shubenacadie Sam (Nova Scotia) have predicted an early spring. With Central and Eastern Canada reporting, I am wondering why we haven’t heard news of any Marmota Manox (aka woodchuck) activity out west? Perhaps he is still digging himself out.
It’s a nice warm November evening here in Ottawa. My workday is complete and I shift my focus on the great work going on in the CACCN. Did you get a chance to attend the Dynamics conference in PEI? I always enjoy the opportunities to connect, socialize and learn how we can do better as an association and within our professional lives, as well.
It is a warm August evening, as I sit quietly to reflect on the day, life and critical care nursing. There is so much going on around us, captivating our attention and our emotion in the media. Our thoughts are with those in Fort McMurray who are challenged once again with nature’s beasts from the devastating fire in May to the recent floods.
I am so excited to begin my two-year term as president of the Canadian Association of Critical Care Nurses. I enjoy working with such a dynamic group of individuals who are passionate about critical care nursing.
I sit here today to pen my last Critical Thinking message as president of the Canadian Association of Critical Care Nurses. It is fitting that today is the first day of the New Year. For me, as for many others, this time of year is a time of reflection on things past and a time to look forward and imagine what the future holds. It is a time of year for aligning our compass, for setting goals,
The community of the Canadian Association of Critical Care Nurses is one of many communities to which Canadian Critical Care Nurses may belong. Every critical care nurse contributes formally and informally to groups, teams and communities of all shapes, sizes and purpose. You may belong to local practice interest group, a scheduling team, an inter professional project team, a national committee, a professional organization, a continuing education class, or maybe even a network of recognition like our Critical Care Certified nurse community.
Nursing has always been esteemed by the public as a trusted and valued profession. How often have we each heard someone say: “I couldn’t do what you do” or “your work must be so difficult”. Many of us will smile, and acknowledge that it is hard work yet very rewarding. Rewarding as it may be, the unique challenges within critical care nursing require a persistent professional who is committed to achieving excellence in their practice.
Change is in the air. Across the country we are emerging from our long winter months and putting the shorter days and the unpredictable weather behind us. Spring is a time when we all start to reconnect with the world around us. We take stock of our immediate space and begin to imagine possibilities and new opportunities. The provision of high-quality evidence-based care is the overarching goal for every critical care nurse. As the most consistent and immediate group of providers, nurses are perfectly positioned to directly impact patient, hospital and system outcomes in critical illness.
